Adrian D. Smith (born August 19, 1944) is an American architect who has designed skyscrapers including the Burj Khalifa, Jin Mao Tower and Trump International Hotel and Tower, as well as the proposed 1,000 m (3,300 ft) Kingdom Tower for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Education

Smith attended Texas A&M University, pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture while being involved with the Corps of Cadets. However he did not graduate, and instead left A&M to work at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) in 1967.[1] He finished his education at the University of Illinois, Chicago and graduated in 1969.

Career

Smith worked on numerous projects at SOM from 1967–2006. He then left to co-found Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. Because of the long design cycle for major projects, he has continued to win awards and recognition for work he did during his long stint at SOM.

Recognition

Projects Smith designed have won 5 international awards, 8 National AIA awards, 22 Chicago AIA awards, and 2 ULI Awards for Excellence.[2] Smith's work at SOM has been featured in museums in the United States, South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He is a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council.[3]

Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa, in Dubai is the holder of the title of World’s Tallest Building. Adrian Smith was the Design Partner at SOM for the Burj Khalifa, officially opened on the 4th of January 2010.
